Chopta Trip
Chopta, a small hamlet located in Uttarakhand with dense and diverse forest. It is part of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary situated in Rudraprayag district. Chopta is famous for rich biodiversity and beautiful alpine treks.
Chopta is also popular as “Mini Switzerland” in India and you can visit any time throughout the year. Chopta is also starting point of Tungnath and Chandrashila trek. Tungnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva which is highest temple in the world and Chandrashila is the highest point in the area.
Chopta is not like typical hill station where you don’t find so much hotels and crowd. Chopta is very quiet destination and paradise for trekking and nature lovers.
In Chopta, trekkers can scale up a height of 4000 m, where is Chandrashila Peak is situated that offers 360 panaromic views of the snow-clad Himalayan summits like Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Trishul.
Chopta is perfect place for camping under the starry sky. You can set your tent in Meadows of Garhwal and enjoy one of the finest camping experiences in Uttarakhand.

The world’s highest Lord Shiva Temple , Tungnath Temple is perched around 3.5 Km away from Chopta. Literally, it means Lord of Mountains. Tungnath temple is the third temple of Panch Kedar which is located in the mountain range of Tunganath that creates the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys.
The trails to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila Peak passes through forests and vast meadows, and offers excellent views of snow clad Himalayas especially Himalayas.
Detailed Itinerary of Chopta
Day 0 :
- Depart from Delhi.
- Overnight journey to Chopta.
Day 1:
- Reach Chopta and check in to your camps. Take rest & have Lunch. Explore the chanting meadows of Chopta.
- Come back in the evening and rest for a while and get ready for dinner Bonfire and party.
- Sleep overnight.
Day 2:
- We will start early in the morning and have our breakfast. We will trek to Tungnath Temple which is the highest Shiva temple in the world. At the top we will see 360 degree view of the most notable peaks like Nanda devi, Kedar, Chandrashila & Dronagiri.
- The total trek time is 7-8 hours. Back to Chopta camp, have dinner and bonfire.
- Sleep overnight.
Day 3:
- We will have breakfast and check out from the camps. We will drive to sari village which is 30 mins away. From Sari village, we will go on a short 2 hrs trek to Deoria Lake.
- Enjoy magnificient views of Chaukhamba peaks.
- Trek down to Sari village and depart for Delhi.
Day 4:
- Reach New Delhi early morning by 7 am with sweet memories.
Altitude –
Chopta is located at the height of 8,790 feet.
Best time to visit –
You can visit Chopta anytime around the year. If specifically, Tungnath temple is to be visited then visit months from April to November is best, otherwise the temple would be closed. In summers from March to July and in winters from October to March is the best time to visit to Chopta.
Mobile connections –
There is no signal in Chopta and poor signal strength at the top at Tungnath majorly all operators.So, it is advisable to tell your program to your family in advance.
How to Reach Chopta
By Air-
The nearest airport to Chopta is Jolly Grant in Dehradun which is situated 226 kms away from Chopta. There is daily flights from Delhi and other major cities to Dehradun. You can take taxi or cabs that are easily available for Chopta.
By Rail-
The closest railway station is Haridwar from Chopta which lies about 209 km. Haridwar railway station is connected to several cities in the country. You can easily get bus or taxi services for Chopta from Haridwar.
By Road-
If you are planning to visit the Chopta in Uttarakhand, then a road journey would be most convenient. There are many buses from nearby towns come to Chopta at regular intervals. You can also even hire private taxi or jeep from Dehradun.
